To have and to hold

32 people…

…including the pastor and his wife, the organist and his wife and the photographer…

…to witness…Shawn and Stacey at Beecher's Creek.

The marriage of Stacey Frasier and Shawn Darling.

We had waited patiently and expectantly for years knowing that Stacey would make this decision like she does every major decision:

informed,

with care,

with prayer,

with resolve.

Anyone who knows Shawn and Stacey know them both to be hard-working servants in love with God.

So we couldn’t be more proud or happy.

And we kinda like them.

Working together

unreached of the day e-mailWe worked shoulder to shoulder for a number of days this year to translate for Joshua Project. Finally, 366 entries and 73,000 words later, we can announce the availability of the Unreached of the Day e-mails in Spanish. Thousands of people are receiving an e-mail a day guiding them in prayer for an unreached people group.

If you’d like to sign up to receive the daily e-mail, visit http://www.unreachedoftheday.org/unreached-email.php. You can choose to receive an e-mail every day or for specific days of the week.

Bible in a year

The year is almost over and I am in the last books of the Old Testament and the last book of the New Testament.

It took a bit of discipline but new online tools helped, such as getting an e-mail every morning with a link to be able to read the verses on the Web.

In 2012 I am thinking about reading the New Testament through 4 times using several approaches. I want to do this to slow things down a bit and study deeper.

I’d love to have some company on this journey. Want to join me in reading your Bible faithfully in 2012? Let me know!

Plugging in

17 November, 2011 (14:45) | Duane, Friends, Journal Entry, Reflection | By: Duane & Erika

I don’t relish getting up early in the morning. I certainly don’t appreciate getting up before the sun does. But this Wednesday I did just that.

I dragged myself out of bed and fired up my laptop so I could talk to Jesus on Skype.

Aspens

An attack of laughter in the Rockies.

An attack of laughter in the Rockies.

This Sunday we drove to Cripple Creek and Victor to see the aspens. We went last year, but miscalculated the peak of leaf season. This year was a whole different story. The mountains were splashed with color — mostly dark green and bright yellow. Duane grew up in upstate New York and is no stranger to awesome displays of Fall color. Erika too, is used to an explosion of lavender jacaranda and orange flamboyant blossoms in Oaxaca. We’re glad God is such an artist!

Best small group ever!

small group Bible study with Woodmen Valley ChapelErika and Duane are both from small churches originally. So when we moved to Colorado Springs and began attending a church with 2 campuses, 3 weekly services and around 7,000 in attendance weekly, you can imagine how overwhelmed we felt. Thankfully Woodmen Valley Chapel capitalizes on small groups. After 3 Sundays in the “Launch” sessions, we joined 5 other couples with children around 10 and below. We didn’t know how the group would get along and we didn’t know how long we would continue in our commitment as a group.

Over a year later we are still going strong, enjoying our DVD series on Love & Respect. We just celebrated the marriage of one of our couples this past weekend. It was neat to have every adult and every kid attend. We are so pleased to be a part of a group of people who are so important in our lives.

A Friday batch of tamales to sell.

A Friday batch of tamales to sell.

Erika has created a menu and soon plans to offer meals for sale at the ministry center where Joshua Project has office space. This should be a source of extra income and joy for Erika as she has been wanting to sell meals for a long time. Who knows, one day you may see a national chain of restaurants with Erika’s name on them! Please pray with us for this new endeavor.

Friends and Neighbors

23 September, 2011 (21:30) | Family, Humor, Journal Entry | By: Duane & Erika

Lately we’ve been lending a hand for two couples who are good friends and also neighbors. We’ve been demolishing, painting, cooking and taking care of kids. Its been fun to watch the transformation from house to home for these two families. At both houses there is a spare room that Duane continues to suggest will function very nicely as his private office!

Thievery

17 August, 2011 (22:06) | Journal Entry | By: Duane & Erika

Until a few days ago I had never had anything stolen from me.
I went to open our car door a couple mornings ago, only to find that both doors were ajar and the trunk was open.
Our GPS and a case of music CDs were taken.
Thankfully the only damage to the car was a bit of chipped paint on the driver side door.
The spiritual side of me hopes they listen to some of the CDs and get convicted to submit their lives to Christ. The carnal side of me relishes the thought of them getting their comeuppance.

What in the world?!

family portraitMichael was in the office and spotted a lighted globe. I pointed out Oaxaca, New York and Colorado. As I was showing him the places we have lived as a family, I thought about what our family is all about. We highly value being mobile so that God can easily move us where he wants. So we are content to have to say goodbye occasionally and pack up and start again.

For now we are putting down roots in Colorado Springs. How long are we here for? Let’s just say we don’t have an exit strategy.
